No Over The Top Celebrating Here

I'm not a Valentine's Scrooge, but it's a holiday I don't like.

We like to celebrate and celebrate things often. We enjoy turning the every day ordinary into extraordinary. I like to think it's my outside-the-box thinking that gives me this ability. However, there's one holiday we have NEVER made extraordinary. It's the holiday that makes me gag a little and is coming very soon.

Yes, that's right. Valentine's Day. I have never, and likely will never, understand this holiday. People seriously need a special day set aside to tell other people you love them?? Can you not manage to do this any other time of the year?

I truly don't understand how this holiday adds value to our lives. I don't need a day set aside to remind me to tell, or rather show, the ones I love that I love them. Maybe I give out I love you's too freely, but it's a daily said and shown thing around here. I'm used to giving hugs and saying "I love you," hundreds of times each day. I'm used to my husband and I (and our children) doing little things for each other all of the time.

I would much rather have someone who fills up my gas tank without me ever asking because he knows I despise stopping to get gas with the kids (and usually dog) in the car, than someone would gets me diamonds on every major holiday. I would rather have kids who give me sweet notes, thanking me for being me, rather than a grand gesture present three times a year (Valentine's, Mother's Day, and Christmas). Mostly, I hope other people have these things too because these are truly the things that should be celebrated.

Although, I'll never turn down a box of chocolates on Valentine's Day.
