Weekend Planner

At the Henry Doorly Zoo two years ago.

Welcome to our weekly post that highlights things to do on the weekends as a family, with friends, or date night ideas. We'll share what we'll be doing each weekend, things to do at home or outdoors with the kids, and things to do in and around Des Moines, Iowa (where we live). A little bit of everything rolled into one post for everyone to draw ideas from!

What We're Doing:

  • Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo to celebrate Mother's Day.
  • Furniture shopping. This mom needs some new furniture.

Other Things To Do:

  • Pick a fresh bouquet of flowers and take them to the mom(s) in your life
  • Mother's Day brunch. Check local restaurants in your area to see what specials they have for Mother's Day or create your own brunch with all of mom's favorites.
  • Throw a Kentucky Derby party. Horse racing isn't exactly our thing, but playing dress up with big hats and watching horses run is something kids get on bored with. Invite family friends over for snacks and have them get in on the fun too!
  • Captain America: Civic War comes out this weekend.

Things To Do Around Des Moines:

  • First Downtown Farmer's Market of the year! I can't believe we're missing it but we'll head down there one of these weekends.
  • Pella Tulip Festival
  • Johnston Kites on the Green (Saturday)
  • The Book of Mormon (Des Moines Civic Center). Hubs and I saw this when it was here in 2015. Hilarious show that's not for the easily offended.
  • 2nd Annual Food Truck Showdown (Saturday, Des Moines Social Club). Also a great day date idea!
  • Cinco De Mayo festival (Saturday, Valley Junction). We took the kids to this festival two years ago. Our favorite part of the festival was watching the dancers and the mariachi band! The kid's favorite part was getting new maracas (that were mysteriously missing the next morning).
  • YESS Duck Derby (Saturday, Jordan Creek Town Center)
